Nordegg Alberta was founded by a German named Martin Nordegg who had claimed the coal in the area, Nordegg Alberta is Located 20min East of the David Thompson Resort, The Town of Nordegg has a lot of history in Alberta as the Town of Nordegg played a big part in the coal-mining industry in the early 1900's. Nordegg Alberta reached a population of nearly 3000 people, and had a Railway that was completed in 1914.
Nordegg Alberta's coal-mine was used to heat furnaces and steam locomotives, Nordegg's Coal mine employed between 700-900 people in the industry nearly 50 years. What made Nordegg Alberta a ghost town the industry in Alberta didn't need the coal as trains started to use diesel and cities started to use natural gas.
Nordegg is now home to an National Historical Society that looked after the threat of the coal-mining site that was set to be demolished. Nordegg Alberta's coal-mining site is now used as a visitors attraction which can be explored by appointment.
Nordegg Alberta became a ghost town for nearly 30 years and now is starting to become a tourist attraction and a peace full place to live. There is a large community being developed in Nordegg because of its spectacular views of the Canadian Rockies.
